How the result is worked out

How the signature is built

The signature is built from a simple HTML table with the styles written inline. That’s the old-fashioned way, and it’s on purpose: email programs like Outlook ignore a lot of modern web code, but tables with inline styles show up properly almost everywhere. We use Arial, which every computer and phone has, and no images, so nothing gets blocked or shows as an attachment.

To use it in Gmail: open Settings, See all settings, then the General tab. Scroll to Signature, create a new one and paste in the preview (select it and copy it, rather than the code). In Outlook: go to Settings, then Signatures, and paste the preview in the same way. If your email program has an HTML option, paste the code instead.

A business email address on your own domain, such as hello@yourbusiness.co.uk, looks more trustworthy than a free webmail address. Email forwarding on your own domain is included with our £47 a month managed website: see domains and email for how it works.

Common questions

Questions about this tool

Why doesn't the signature include a logo?

Images in signatures are often blocked until the reader clicks to show them, and some email programs show them as attachments. A text signature always shows. If you want a logo, host the image on your website and add it to the HTML yourself.

How do I add the signature in Gmail?

In Gmail, open Settings, See all settings, and the General tab. Under Signature, create a new signature, then copy the preview from this page and paste it into the box. Remember to save changes at the bottom of the page.

How do I add the signature in Outlook?

In Outlook, open Settings and find Signatures (under Mail or Accounts, depending on your version). Create a new signature and paste in the preview. Outlook on the web, Windows and Mac each keep their own signature settings, so you may need to add it in each.

Should I put my home address in my signature?

Only if customers need it. A sole trader working from home may prefer just a town or area. If you’re a limited company, UK rules expect your registered company details in business emails, so check what you need to include.

Can I get an email address on my own domain?

Yes. With our £47 a month managed website, email forwarding on your domain is included, so hello@yourbusiness.co.uk arrives in the inbox you already use. It’s forwarding, not extra mailboxes.

Is anything I type saved?

No. The signature is made in your browser and nothing is sent to us. Close the page and it’s gone, so copy it somewhere safe once you’re happy.
