How the ideas are made
The tool takes your business name and removes punctuation, spaces and words like “Ltd”. It writes “&” both as “and” and without it, then tries your name on its own, with your town, with your service, and your service with your town. Each idea is shown in .co.uk, .uk and .com.
Each idea gets a simple score out of 100. It starts at 100 and loses points for length, numbers and spellings that people often get wrong, such as colour and color, or letters that double up where two words join (like oakkitchens). We never suggest hyphens, because they’re awkward to say out loud.
A .co.uk or .uk is £8.01 a year with us, and a .com is £12.72 a year. See all prices on our domain names page. Your domain name is included with our £47 a month managed website.
Questions about this tool
Should I choose .co.uk or .com?
If most of your customers are in the UK, a .co.uk is the ending people know best and it’s £8.01 a year. A .com at £12.72 suits you if you sell abroad or the .co.uk is taken. Many businesses register both and point one at the other.
What is a .uk domain?
It’s a shorter UK ending, such as yourbusiness.uk, at the same price as a .co.uk. It works the same way. Some customers still type .co.uk out of habit, so if you choose .uk it’s worth registering the .co.uk too.
Should I put my town in my domain name?
It can help if your business name is common or already taken, and it tells people where you work. Leave it out if you plan to cover a wider area later, or if it makes the name very long.
Are hyphens in domain names bad?
They’re not bad for Google, but they’re awkward for people. You have to say “hyphen” every time you give out the address, and people often forget them. That’s why this tool doesn’t suggest them.
Do keywords in a domain name help with Google?
Not much on their own. A clear name helps people understand what you do, but useful pages, a complete Google Business Profile and genuine reviews matter far more.
Can I check if the name is available here?
Not on this page. Each idea has a Check and register link that opens our billing area and searches for that exact name, so you can see straight away if it’s free.
