Most freelance web designers end up hosting their clients’ websites, whether they planned to or not. The client wants one person to call, and you’d rather not hand over a site you’ve just built to a host that won’t answer the phone. Our cPanel hosting gives you two straightforward ways to do it, on UK servers in Manchester, with no setup fee and no contract.
Should I put all my client sites in one hosting account?
For a few small brochure sites, yes, it’s usually fine. Web Pro is £7.99 a month for unlimited websites and 100 GB of storage, so ten quiet sites for local trades works out at under 80p each. You log in to one cPanel and see everything.
The catch is that everything shares one account. All the sites use the same 2 CPU cores and 4 GB of RAM, sit in the same backups and share one cPanel login. If one site gets very busy, or a client asks for their own login, it gets awkward. So keep Web Pro for sites you look after yourself, and give anything busier its own account.
When should each client have their own account?
Give a client their own account when the site takes payments, when it’s busy, when the client wants to manage their own email, or when there’s any chance they’ll move it elsewhere later. Web Starter is £2.99 a month and WordPress Starter is £3.99. Each one is a separate cPanel with its own resources, its own backups and its own email accounts.
It also makes life easier when a client relationship ends. You don’t have to pick one site out of a shared account. The account just carries on, with the new person running it.
Who pays for the hosting?
That’s up to you. You can order every plan in your own WebHostGB account and include hosting in what you charge your clients, which is what most freelancers do. Or your client can order it in their own name and give you the cPanel login. Either way, the prices are the same and there’s no contract.
Whichever you choose, we’d suggest the domain is registered in your client’s name. It saves arguments later if you ever part ways. You can register a .co.uk for £8.01 a year.
WordPress sites
