Read this before pointing an existing domain at us. It is the single most common way people accidentally break something during a website move.
The problem, in one paragraph
Your domain’s DNS controls both where your website lives and where your email goes. They are separate records in the same address book. When you change nameservers to point the website at us, the whole address book moves — and unless the email records come with it, email addressed to you stops arriving.
Not bounces. Not an error. Just silence, which is much worse, because you will not notice for days.
What to do first
Before changing anything, get a copy of your current DNS records from whoever runs your DNS now.
You want everything, but in particular:
- All MX records, with their priority numbers
- Any TXT record starting
v=spf1 - Any TXT record with
_domainkeyin its name (DKIM) - Any TXT record on
_dmarc - Any CNAME for
mail,autodiscover,webmailor similar
Take a screenshot. Send it to us. We will recreate them on our side before the switch, so email keeps flowing the moment the domain moves.
If you use one of these, tell us
Microsoft 365 / Outlook — needs an MX record, an SPF TXT record, and usually autodiscover as a CNAME.
Google Workspace — needs MX records and an SPF record, and DKIM if you set it up.
Email from your old web host — this is the one that catches people. If your email came bundled with your old hosting and you cancel that hosting, the mailboxes go too, regardless of DNS. Do not cancel your old hosting until you have confirmed where your email actually lives.
A forwarding address — where you@yourbusiness.co.uk forwards to a personal Gmail. Still needs MX records.
If you use email on your domain and are not sure how
Get in touch before making any changes. Tell us the domain and roughly how you check email — a website, an app on your phone, Outlook on a PC. We can look up what is there now and tell you what needs preserving.
This is genuinely easier for us to sort out beforehand than afterwards.
What if I only use a personal address?
If your business email is yourname@gmail.com or similar, none of this applies. Nothing is attached to your domain and there is nothing to preserve.
Adding email later
You can point your domain’s email anywhere at any time by adding MX records in your dashboard. We do not sell mailboxes, so you are free to use whoever you like — most people use Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace.
Add the records your provider gives you under Domains → DNS, exactly as written.
