At one end there is first and second fix on building sites — doors, skirting, studwork, roofs. The customer is a builder or a main contractor, the decision is about reliability and rate, and a site’s job is to look like a capable outfit with capacity.

At the other end there is a fitted wardrobe in a Victorian bedroom, a staircase, a kitchen in oak. The customer is a homeowner spending real money on something they will look at every day for twenty years, and the decision is almost entirely visual and emotional.
