01 — the short version
nothing gets cut until it's marked out
Thirty years on the tools teaches one thing above the rest: work to the opening you have actually got. Floors slope, walls run out, and older Liverpool houses were rarely square to begin with — plenty of newer ones aren't either.
So a job starts the same way every time. Tape out, pencil line marked, checked, then cut. It costs ten minutes at the start and saves the rest of the week.

Bench work is made up to the measurements taken, then brought out and fitted. Nothing gets forced or packed out to cover a bad number.

Sound old joinery is worth keeping. Where damaged timber can be cut back and repaired instead of ripped out, that is usually the better answer — and the cheaper one.

Level, plumb, square, three times over. Lines that read straight on the day still read straight a year later, which is the whole point of marking out.

Off-cuts away, dust kept where it belongs, the room handed back in a state you can walk into. Most of this work happens in houses people are living in.
