Most people assume that unless your website has any monetary value you wont be hacked, but this is not the case. The majority of websites that get hacked are attempts to use the server which your website is hosted on for spam or masses of emails
1. Keep software up to date
A lot of the time, people are able to gain access to your website due to out of date software. Especially highly popular software such as WordPress and Joomla, which have a huge plugin archive and a lot of community input are always used as there is more chance for an exploit. This is why you should always aim to keep your website up-to-date as possible.
2. SQL injection
SQL injection attacks are when an attacker uses a web form field or URL parameter to gain access to or manipulate your database. Most hackers will insert unwanted code into a query when you are attempting to fetch data from the server. You can easily prevent this by always using parameterised queries, most web languages have this feature and it is easy to implement.
3. Error messages
Don’t give too much information away when you show error messages on your website. The best practice is to have some form of redirection for your users with a short and simple message, so they do not know what the problem is and have no possible way of exploiting any issues with the performance of your website.
Make sure your password strengths are always as high as possible, changing them frequently and never use the same password more than once on a single website. Don’t forget if you sign up to someones website, depending on what software or the make up of their website is they may be able to see your password. Don’t trust them to be upstanding and not use this knowledge for their own gain. If you host your game server with us, make sure your game server hosting password is different to your web hosting password.
5. Website security tools
There is a huge wealth of website security tools you can obtain from your web hosting provider. Use things like malware scanners, SSL certificates, virus scanners and more to ensure your website is never compromised. Don’t forget that even if they don’t cause any direct problems, there is always a backlash with your users as they may lose trust in your website or business. Ask your web hosting provider for more help when setting up these tools.
