Foundation is a framework built by Zurb that is designed to get your project from a simply prototype to a fully functioning product as quickly as possible. Similar to Bootstrap, Foundation allows users to start with a the very basics in terms of function, layout and grid structure.
Used by many large websites, Foundation is built mobile first, allowing web designers to build from the smallest viewport to the biggest, giving a much better experience for the end user.
To get started, you can go to the Foundation website and download their stock .css files, or use less or sass to customise and extend your setup more easily.
Some of the more notable features of Foundation are:
Foundation can be used with completely semantic markup. Write clean code without sacrificing any utility or convenience. Keep everything simple and in one place, whilst keeping simplicity at the forefront
Responsive Grid / Flex Grid
Foundation was the first responsive framework, and it permeates every aspect of the framework. Build for every device with ease. Foundation has been built to support all browsers and all devices easily, without hassle.
Rails friendly / Backend Friendly
You can use Foundation with any back end, but it’s especially well-tuned for Rails implementations.
Sass for rapid deployment
The premier CSS preprocessor is at the heart of Foundation.
From the underlying code, to plugins, to everything around Foundation, has been built from the ground up to perform at the best of its ability. There is no unnecessary code or file structures to weight down your framework and cause slow page loading speeds, unlike other frameworks.
